"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

Optimism's For Fools (Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness)

This happiness corrupt political shit"

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) A few days ago the Manic Street Preachers announced they were leaving the band on a stand-by. This means we won't be having some of the best rock in ages for who knows how long. I particulary am going to miss them, especially in a time when the presence of a politically committed speech is more than needed. The Manics have always been proud of their origins, all raised up in families whose members used to work in the mines and suffer the hardest years of Thatcherism. They grew up developing a strong class-consciousness and many of their songs reflect such socialist view. Generally, these songs condemn things like injustice, capitalism, consumerism, fascism or violation of human rights, sometimes with very little space for lyricism (Freedom of Speech Won't Feed My Children, Gold Against The Soul, or Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart). But then, there's a few ones where protest and poetry just meet nicely and produce a powerful, stunning effect on skin and mind, as in The Second Great Depression, If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next or in the eternal, almost nihilist anthem Motorcycle Emptiness.

The Manics describe a world full of disillusion, where everything is but a facade and people have ended up being just a piece in the machinery, not able to do anything but watch and keep silent. Nearly twenty years have passed and the message is not old-fashioned at all. Way the opposite. Neo-liberalism and its political conservative counterparts are aiming at the destruction of citizenship as we have known it. Their line of action is 'let the markets dictate economy and policy so the corporations can survive and grow bigger and then be willing to help the system back in the next elections'. Of course, the system is run by a few who have everything while the immmense majority of people have less and less -not to mention the underdeveloped world, where there isn't even a system, or they don't even know they are part of it, only the lowest part. In the western world, the paradox is that we are suppposed to have democracies, but what kind of democracy is that where citizens are counted but never count*?

It seems like since the end of WW2 we have been building a society where welfare and justice could be out there for all but suddenly we are starting to learn that not only are these aims unaccomplished, but they are not considered priorities any longer. Banks come first. Everything else is delayed.... forever?

I blame the current leading parties in Europe and North America -either left or right wing- for the forthcoming social degradation which will turn neo-liberalism into a neo-fascism eager to shut the mouths of all who disagree with the system and will lead the world into a constant violation of rights. I hope I am never right.

My ChildrenGold Against The Soul, or Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart).
